Kenya Safari — In Depth

🇰🇪 Kenya — The Classic East Africa Safari

Kenya is where the modern safari was born and it remains the benchmark against which all other African safari destinations are measured. With Nairobi as one of Africa's best-connected international hubs, getting to and between Kenya's parks is easier and more affordable than almost anywhere else on the continent.

Kenya's trump card is variety. Within a single 7 to 10-day trip you can see the Big Five in multiple different ecosystems — from the sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara to the Kilimanjaro backdrop of Amboseli, the flamingo-fringed lakes of Nakuru and the vast red wilderness of Tsavo. No other East African country offers this range in such a compact and accessible geography.

Kenya's Strongest Advantages

The Maasai Mara river crossings are the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. From July to October, over 1.5 million wildebeest make their perilous crossing of the crocodile-filled Mara River. Watching tens of thousands of animals plunge into the water simultaneously is an experience that no photograph or documentary fully prepares you for.

Kenya is significantly more affordable than Tanzania at the mid-range level. Park fees are lower, there are more accommodation options at every price point, and the competition among local operators keeps prices competitive. A comparable safari in Tanzania typically costs 30 to 50 percent more.

Nairobi is one of Africa's best safari gateways. Direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Doha and many other hubs land at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. From there, the Maasai Mara is a 45-minute flight or a 5-hour drive. No other East African safari destination is this easy to reach.

Beach combinations are seamless. The Kenya coast — Diani, Mombasa, Malindi and Watamu — is directly connected to safari parks via ro
